In May 2023, the standard that NZ has adopted to assist in pallet racking design, install and maintenance has had an update from the 2012 edition.
AS4084:2012 is no longer, and is superseded by two new standards: AS4084.1:2023 which looks at the way pallet racking is designed and AS4084.2:2023 that looks at the operation and maintenance of the system.

There have been changes to how issues are recorded and classed; (still using the traffic light system) but the main difference is around how inspections are completed and recorded on site.
Inspections on selective racking are now mandatory by someone who has relevant experience within the racking industry. This could be a designer, engineer, installer or someone with similar experience with steel storage racking. These individuals must possess the skills to be able to understand the requirements for the relevant brand and type of storage racking being inspected. They must also have the ability to oversee the racking installation and repair.
Evidence of a racking inspection is now required to be on site should this ever be required, along with any repair work carried out. Almost like a full-service history of your car.
We still encourage internal checks be carried out, as your yearly inspection is only as good as the day the inspection was carried out. If your forklift accidentally damages a brace the following day, it may end up going unnoticed until the next year or result in a catastrophic failure in the meantime.
